Masna Zlín is a medium-sized slaughterhouse located on the Czech-Slovak border. The company initially implemented environmental protection measures during participation in the Czech-Norwegian Cleaner Production Project. The good housekeeping measures which were implemented generated annual savings of US$ 36,500.
Further measures generated annual savings of US$ 7,690, with a pay-back period of 1.8 years. Efficiency was improved in the area of waste water treatment and the implementation of cleaner production measures reduced the environmental load of waste water from 1,800 mg of BOD/litre to 700 mg BOD/litre. After the first project, the company went on to implement measures independently. Total cost-savings for all measures implemented amounted to US$ 150,000 per year with an average payback period of 3.5 months.
